Beaufort Street Network News What is happening on Beaufort Street

Big Weekend in Mary Street Piazza

It was a fantastic weekend in the Mary Street Piazza. There were lots of activities, lots of people and lots of sunshine. The petting zoo was a massive success. The adults enjoyed it as much as the kids!

The piazza is in a two week trial period. We need your support to help make it permanent. Please let the City of Vincent know <here>. It only takes you 1 minute but could benefit Beaufort Street for decades!

Check out some of the pics from the weekend.

Beaufort Street Art Market coming soon

Beaufort Street Art Market

We are excited to announce we have applied for a temporary licence to hold the first Beaufort Street Art Market in the Barlee Street Carpark (cnr. Beaufort Street) Sunday 7th September between 9am – 1pm.

Art stalls and displays will go in market style so mark it now in your diary to pop on down and meet and greet local artists and give them a big show of support. Artists interested in displaying work should contact us without delay at as spots are filling up fast!

Please pass on the details and spread the word to all your creative friends! Going forward and pending Council approval we plan to present the Beaufort Street Art Market on the 1st Sunday of each month.

Local artists often struggle with finding venues to display and market their work. We love to support the local creative community and The Beaufort Street Art Market will be a perfect way to do this. Please save the date and come on down!

Mary Street Pop Up Piazza Launch

The Mary Street Piazza 2 Week Pop Up Trial will be launched at 6pm Friday 25 July. Make sure you get down to Beaufort Street to check it out. The trial will run from 25 July until Friday 8 August.  Here’s how it was looking earlier today –

Mary Street Piazza in progress 23.7.14

There will be a program of activities in the piazza plus plenty of chill out time where you can grab a coffee or bite to eat from local businesses and relax in the new space.

This is a fantastic idea that really fits with the community’s vision for the street in the Better Beaufort Action Plan.

Principle 1 of the Action Plan is to ‘Create a great place for people of all ages’.

Attracting people is the key to creating a great place and supporting local businesses. We need to attract more people, particularly on weekdays, which are currently quiet times for the street. This can be achieved by creating a pedestrian-friendly street and places to sit and relax. Making the street more interesting and comfortable for people of all ages will help increase pedestrian numbers. Think about everything from the perspective of pedestrians and cyclists first. People don’t shop from their cars.

“If you plan for people and places, you get people and places. It is not true that more traffic and road capacity are the inevitable results of growth. They are in fact the products of very deliberate choices that have been made to shape our communities to accommodate the private automobile. We have the ability to make different choices — starting with the decision to design our streets as comfortable and safe places — for people on foot, not people in cars.”  Project for Public Spaces

“We’re looking at our streets as valuable public places, and we need to make it easier and safer for people to walk around and bike…. Good streets are good business.” Janette Sadik-Khan, New York City Transport Commissioner

Winner Announced for Better Beaufort $1,000 Grant Round 1

Drumroll……after sorting through the fabulous proposals and applications submitted for the Beaufort Street Network’s Better Beaufort $1,000 Grant project, we have a winner!

Congratulations to Mel McVee who has successfully secured our first grant to activate the corner of Beaufort Street and Clarence Street with some amazing street furniture. The corner will soon be transformed into a chilled out area for you to rest and relax…and perhaps chow down on a Salsa’s taco or two whilst you are sitting near their store?! We can’t wait to share the finished product with you over the next couple of months. Stay tuned!

We received a number of applications which were all very worthy and it was a very close call – we would have loved to have been able to accommodate them all! As funds become available we will be rolling out further offers of grants to help our Better Beaufort initiative so keep in contact with us – join us as a member [here], on Facebook [here], Twitter @BeaufortStNet and Instagram @beaufortstreetnetwork.
