What Are Your Ideas for Beaufort Street in 2015?

Welcome to 2015! We hope it is going to be another fantastic year for Beaufort Street.

What are your ideas for Beaufort Street in 2015? How can we make it a better place?

We achieved a lot in 2014 and we’d like to hear your ideas on what should happen in 2015. Tell us what you think by contacting us via:

Email: [email protected]

Facebook: BeaufortStreetNetwork

Twitter: @BeaufortStNet

The Beaufort Street Network is run by volunteers and relies on memberships and donations. So also have a think about HOW we can make your ideas happen. Finding the people, time and resources to implement great ideas are our main challenges!

As a reminder, here are some of the things that happened in 2014 to create a better Beaufort Street.

Beaufort Street Road Art

Beaufort St Road Art
The colourful murals on Beaufort St have helped to slow vehicle speeds according to City of Vincent traffic data

The City of Vincent and Beaufort Street Network worked with the Public Transport Authority to install these bright new entry statements in November. This is the first time this has been done on a major road in Australia. The art has been installed on the corner of Grosvenor Road (outside IGA, Planet and the Flying Scotsman) and St Alban Ave (near Ace Pizza). The idea is that they will help brighten up the street, create interest and slow cars down through the main pedestrian areas.

Beaufort Street Art Market

Beaufort St Art Market 7.9.14 (42)
All art and items for sale at the Art Market is made in Western Australia

The Beaufort Street Network launched the Art Market to promote local artists and provide a vibrant new Sunday morning market. The market is organised by the Network and is held on the first Sunday of each month from 9am to 1pm. Find out more at https://beaufortstreet.com.au/art-market/

Beaufort Street Festival 2014

Beaufort Sign
The Festival attracted around 160,000 locals and visitors in 2014

This year’s Festival was amazing with something for everyone. The street was packed from midday in to the evening and local businesses did a roaring trade. You can see a timelapse of what happened over the course of the day at https://beaufortstreet.com.au/festival-timelapse/

Mary Street Piazza

Kids loved the animals
Kids (and adults) loved the animals at the pop up petting zoo

The local community has been asking for free, comfortable public spaces on the street. The Network worked with the City of Vincent to launch a 2 week pop up piazza on Mary Street. The community feedback was fantastic with 87% of the 300 submissions supporting a new public space for Beaufort Street.

The City is now working to develop a permanent public piazza space during 2015.

Hollywood has its sign. Now we have our own colourful Beaufort Street sign. Well done to the City of Vincent!

Shop Local Campaign

Shop local

Yelp is promoting the Shops Local on Beaufort Street campaign – http://www.yelp.com.au/list/beaufort-street-mt-lawley-to-highgate-mt-lawley. Shopping local is one of the easiest and best ways to support a vibrant and independent street without lots of chain stores.

Better Beaufort Action Plan

Laneway was packed
The laneway mural project, organised by the Laneway Collective, is a great example of locals creating positive change

The Network developed a plan for a better Beaufort Street in conjunction with the community. It’s already an exciting and unique place, but it could be even better. But great places don’t just happen. They need to be created by people for people. It takes some hard work. But there are huge benefits for businesses, residents and visitors.

Lots more art appeared to brighten the street. There are heaps of examples at https://beaufortstreet.com.au/art/

Street Upgrades

New seats

The Network worked proactively with the City of Vincent to upgrade the street, including:

  • Conducting a ‘street audit’ to identify issues to be addressed
  • Planting new trees, shrubs and garden beds to provide shade and greenery
  • Installing 12 new seats to create more comfortable places to sit
  • Upgrading bike racks to encourage cycling

New Businesses

Astor Gelato

We welcomed new businesses to the street including Astor Gelato, Guzman Y Gomez, Grill’d, The Dental Gallery and Kingston International College.

Greening the Street

Beaufort St 20.12.14 (5)
BB Burger Bar has done a great job greening the street

Greening the street was a big focus in 2014 and will be in 2015 too. The City of Vincent has completed its streetscape upgrades, which added new trees, creepers and garden beds. The Network will be encouraging businesses and residents to help green the street in 2015.
