Independent local business
There is no doubt that Beaufort Street is the place to be! Cool new bars, popular cafes and great retail shops are drawing people in – as well as the Beaufort Street Festival, which is a showcase for the street to thousands of new people!
However, this can bring new pressures to the area – such as increasing rents for business as landlords capitalise on Beaufort’s popularity as a retail and visitor destination. The real risk here is that renting on the Street will only become affordable to large franchise or national stores, driving out innovative independents that have shaped Beaufort Street and are responsible for making the strip so unique.
The Beaufort Street Network is tackling this new issue facing Beaufort Street. The Network believes it is important to the long-term character and community of the precinct that we foster and support independent small business.
The Network is currently developing a paper to consider potential options for the future of Beaufort Street local businesses as well prospective marketing campaigns to support small retailers. Buying local has never been so important.
